Throughout history the sea urchin was an amulet collected and worn by people in many cultures, symbolizing good fortune, protection and fertility. The urchin protects our coral reef systems by feeding on algae in order to maintain balance. Throughout my artistic journey I have painted and sculpted this sea specimen observing it underwater as well as its delicate shell found along island beaches where I live. To me, the urchin is a reminder of the balance of beauty and fragility that exists in life and in our eco system.
